Although this year’s Pride celebrations are mostly virtual, they are, nonetheless, important to recognize. Let’s take this month—and every month—to honor and celebrate our LBGTQ+ colleagues and the wonderful contributions they provide to this agency.
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth! Here in the Forest Service we recognize it as an important day in our nation’s history. Juneteenth commemorates when, on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, TX, the last group of slaves learned that they were free.

In 1979, Charles "Chip" Cartwright became the first African-American District Ranger, serving on the Conconully District of the Okanogan National Forest in Washington. In 1988, he was named Supervisor of the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia.
