SSA issues monthly payments to approximately 70 million people. Even the slightest error can result in millions of dollars in over- or underpayments. In FY 2017, SSA estimated computation errors resulted in more than $1 billion in over- and underpayments, and verification deficiencies resulted in nearly $1 billion in overpayments.
