Scientists at the National Cancer Institute are committed to encouraging science literacy and increasing enthusiasm for STEM. Partners benefit from having researchers who are participating in cutting edge research assist in their classrooms and programs. We seek to help you fulfill your science needs, whether it be assistance with labs, facilitating workshops, or providing career guidance. In turn, we get to share our knowledge and expertise with students who may be the next generation of scientists.

NCI Scientists in the Community is currently partnering with the following schools and organizations.

Poolesville High School

Poolesville High School is a public magnet high school in Poolesville, MD. Our partnership with the Science, Math and Computer Science Program will assist the juniors and seniors with written and verbal science communication. For the juniors, we will assist in development of journal club to prepare them for their summer internships.  Rising seniors spend a summer participating in a professional STEM internship and subsequently produce a research paper, poster and presentation on their work. For the seniors, we will develop relevant workshops to aid their written science communication.  In addition, assistance to teachers will be provided to build relevant curriculum, as well as developmental workshops to the teachers and students.

Wheaton High School

Wheaton High School is a public high school in Montgomery County, MD, near Silver Spring. We will collaborate with the Biomedical Science Academy and Project Lead the Way Program to bring scientists for career seminars, updates on current research and relevant topics, and mentorship on student legacy projects. For the 2018-2019 school year, we will also assist with the Principles of Biomedical Science labs to encourage enthusiasm for STEM.

NCI Frederick Education Outreach Program

The Education Outreach Program provides students (K-8) in Frederick County with supplemental science training through engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based experiences. The opportunity to inspire lifelong learners and science enthusiasts is an important aspect of the program. Outreach is provided through formal instruction within the classroom, STEM nights, and during community events. The goal of the outreach is to provide science education to all students. By partnering with EOP, there will be an increase in the outreach opportunities in Frederick, as well as an increase in the types of activities our scientists can provide.

Learning Undefeated

Learning Undefeated sparks interest in life-changing career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for underserved communities.  This is accomplished through innovative, effective and experiential STEM education programs for middle school and high school students, and workforce development programs for adults.  By partnering with Learning Undefeated, NCI Scientists in the Community will the opportunity for sharing our scientific expertise via curriculum development and execution for their mobile lab program.
