Lifting startups across the “valley of death”
Several startup companies have grown directly out of Argonne research and expertise, including Advanced Diamond Technologies in Romeoville, Ill. and SmartSignal in Lisle, Ill., which was subsequently purchased by GE Intelligent Platforms.
Argonne’s Chain Reaction Innovations (CRI) is a two-year program for innovators who are working on transformative energy and science-based technologies, entrepreneurs who are developing businesses that will create new jobs and industries. Through an annual call, four to six teams are selected to join Chain Reaction Innovations. Argonne serves as a support team for these bright innovators, giving them resources and a mix of technical, business, marketing, entrepreneurial, and intellectual property portfolio management skills to leverage.

Training the next-generation high-tech workforce
Argonne empowers the next generation of STEM problem solvers to address the nation’s science and technology challenges of tomorrow. Dedicated to improving education in science, mathematics, engineering and technology, in fiscal year 2017 we inspired over 29,000 youth and families through our outreach and student competition program, hosted 4,480 middle and high school students at our onsite learning center, connected nearly 900 undergraduate and graduate students to world-class research opportunities and supported 270 post-doctoral scientists and engineers in gaining valuable experience as part of our R&D activities.
