Community involvement and investment in Northern New Mexico

Los Alamos National Laboratory is an invested and involved member of the Northern New Mexico community, supporting a variety of economic development initiatives, educational programs and giving activities.

Economic development initiatives

Los Alamos National Laboratory is committed to investing and partnering in economic development initiatives and programs that have a positive impact to stimulate business growth that creates jobs and strengthens communities in Northern New Mexico. We partner with regional economic development organizations and business service providers.

Since 2001, the Laboratory's efforts have produced the following impact:

  • 7,113 projects with NM small businesses 
  • $340.6 million attracted in financing
  • 11,267 jobs created or retained
  • $417.4 million generated in salaries

Education and workforce development programs

Los Alamos National Laboratory is committed to investing and partnering in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education initiatives that have a positive impact on student achievement and address community and regional workforce needs. The Laboratory encourages students and teachers to expand their horizons and achieve success in STEM education.

Highlights from 2019 include:

  • 50 students in grades 6-8 took part in a free math summer camp as part of the Laboratory's participation in the Regional Partnership School with Pojoaque Valley School District and New Mexico Highlands University
  • more than 1,800 student intern positions at the Laboratory
  • $773,500 in scholarships awarded to 116 Northern New Mexico students
  • 339 Lab employees volunteered 3,868 hours of time for 228 STEM education programs
  • The Laboratory helped coordinate the inaugural New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge, with 65 schools and more than 600 students taking part

Giving opportunities

The Laboratory is committed to giving back to the Northern New Mexico community. The Laboratory’s Community Partnerships Office manages giving programs that provide opportunities for Lab employees and retirees to make gifts of time, talent and money to improve the quality of life of our neighbors.

Highlights from 2019 include:

  • 1,953 employees (19% of the workforce) donated to philanthropic programs, with $2.6 million going to 778 nonprofits
  • Employees donated 988 gifts for the Holiday Gift Drive, the equivalent of 14,000 meals during the Food Drive
  • Employees also donated 800 backpacks filled with school supplies (and an additional $4,810 in donations) for the Back to School Drive
