Resource Information Group (RIG)

The Resource Information Group (RIG) is a part of the National Forest System (NFS) Ecosystem Management Coordination staff located in the Washington Office. RIG is responsible for policy, direction, and guidance regarding inventory, monitoring and assessment activities done to support land management on national forests and grasslands. These responsibilities apply to social, economic, and ecological resource assessment activities.

Areas of responsibility include the following:

  • Inventory and monitoring
  • Monitoring related directives
  • Land Management Plan (LMP) monitoring
  • Monitoring program management and planning
  • Integrated inventory
  • Ecosystem Assessment
  • Multiparty monitoring and collaboration
  • Various projects to deliver on these responsibilities

Specific RIG responsibilities include guidance regarding program management, program planning, standard information management systems, corporate information management, accomplishment reporting, and quality assurance and control. RIG coordinates with other staff units throughout the Forest Service, with other agencies, and with many partners outside the agency.
