Outstanding New Environmental Scientist (ONES) Program

To respond to the environmental health challenges of tomorrow, we must invest in the next generation of environmental health scientists today. Through the Outstanding New Environmental Scientist Award (ONES) program, NIEHS cultivates America’s future environmental health research leaders at the start of their careers to support innovative environmental health research.

Grantees come from a variety of scientific disciplines, including genetics, toxicology, epidemiology, neuroscience, and others. Those selected display a commitment to investigating the relationships between environmental exposures and human disease. Through the ONES grants, these scientists conduct cutting-edge research on the health effects resulting from exposure to environmental contaminants such as arsenic, air pollution, industrial chemicals, and pesticides.

Grantees are generally tenure-track faculty members who are defined as Early Stage Investigators by the National Institutes of Health.
