Important Updates to the Naturalization Test
USCIS has revised the civics portion of the naturalization test. All applicants for naturalization with a filing date (also known as a received date) on or after Dec. 1, 2020, will be required to take the 2020 version of the civics test. For more information, visit The 2020 Version of the Civics Test page. Applicants for naturalization with a filing date before Dec. 1, 2020, are required to take the 2008 version of the civics test.

Some teaching materials including the beginning and intermediate lesson plans found on this page are for the 2008 version of the civics test. However, there are general materials on this page that can help support your program, curriculum, and lessons including videos, program development guides, tip sheets and idea boards.

USCIS has developed a variety of materials to help educators supplement classroom instruction to prepare their students for the naturalization process and English and civics test.

Program administrators can use resources found in this section to enhance adult citizenship education and English as a Second Language programs. Community, faith-based, and civic organizations, and employers that would like to help immigrants adjust to life in the United States and prepare for citizenship can also find helpful resources to support their initiatives.

Visit the Study for the Test page to find materials for the English and 2008 version of the civics test to use as part of your classroom resources. Many of these items can also serve as self-study tools.

Visit the 2020 Version of the Civics Test page to find study materials for the 2020 version of the civics test.
