SEPA and ScottMadden Issue Summary Report on California and New York Energy Market Transformation

The Smart Electric Power Alliance and ScottMadden have released a summary of the differing approaches California and New York are taking toward regulatory policies and technical issues related to the integration of distributed energy resources onto the grid. The report is a summary of thousands of pages of regulatory filings in both states, allowing readers to quickly understand the areas of overlap and divergence in the goals and execution of energy system reform in each state.

SolarCity Pulls “MyPower” Loan Product

SolarCity has pulled its MyPower loan product off the market, raising doubts for the company that as recently as October 2014 lauded the product as the best thing on the market. Lyndon Rive, the CEO of SolarCity, stated that the replacement will be “...be simpler. We want something that’s as (simple) to sell as a PPA instead of the sales team going to PPA as the default option.”

Red Lake Nation goes solar

Tribal leaders of the Red Lake Nation are installing 15 megawatts worth of solar panels onto the rooftops of their largest buildings. The panels are predicted to generate enough power to light every bulb in the the tribe’s three casinos, the tribal college and all the government buildings.

The City of Lodi Electric Utility began accepting rebate applications from customers interested in the installation of solar photovoltaic systems. The rebate will be calculated at $1.56 per watt, which is one of the most generous rates in California. 

Cheapest power in the US? Palo Alto muni eyes solar at under $37/MWh

February 23, 2016

The Palo Alto City Council recommended approval of a 25-year contract to purchase power from a solar PV system at a price of $36.76/MWh, or about 3.7 cent/kWh. 

 

Hampshire college goes 100 percent solar

December 21, 2015

Hampshire College, a small liberal arts college in Amherst, Mass., will soon be home to a "living building" and the only residential college generating 100 percent of its electricity from solar panels.

Industry news expounding low cost utility-scale solar has been prevalent in recent months, touting prices below $40/MWh in multiple jurisdictions.1 While eye-catching, the reality is that utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) project economics vary widely and are dependent upon a host of drivers (Figure 1). As utilities consider adding solar to their resource mix, understanding these drivers and their implications is necessary for securing high-value, cost-competitive projects. This report will enable utilities to: (1) understand solar cost drivers; (2) recognize the value of solar in their resource mix; and, (3) establish a framework to evaluate solar projects.
