Search Tips and Techniques

This site has a basic search tool and an advanced search. The basic search box appears in the main navigation at the top every page. The “Search” pull-down tab in the main navigation shows various search options:

  • Document Search: You can search by citation (for example, enter: ’75 FR 12345′ or ’75 Fed. Reg. 12345′ in the search box (with or without periods)), using Boolean options, or several other search techniques. See the complex search operators help page for more information.
  • Advanced Document Search: The advanced search permits users to narrow results by date, agency, document category, docket ID, Regulation Identifier Number (RIN), CFR part, and other attributes extracted from the documents.
  • Public Inspection: You can search for information within the current day’s public inspection documents.  To search for previous days’ public inspection documents that have been published in the Federal Register, use either “Document Search” or “Advanced Document Search” to find the published document. Then look for the link to the public inspection version at the bottom of the utility bar on the left side of the Federal Register document.
