Status of U.S. Fish Stocks

  • In 2018, due to the combined efforts of NOAA Fisheries, the eight regional fishery management councils, and other partners, one previously overfished stock was rebuilt and the number of stocks on the overfishing list remained near all-time lows.
  • At the end of 2018, the overfishing list included 28 stocks and the overfished list included 43 stocks.
  • Since 2000, 45 U.S. federally managed fish stocks have been declared rebuilt.

Fish Landings

  • In 2018, U.S. commercial fishermen landed 9.4 billion pounds of seafood valued at $5.6 billion.

  • The United States is the world’s second largest consumer of seafood in the world, eating 5.2 billion pounds in 2018. The average American ate about 16.1 pounds of fish and shellfish, an increase of 0.1 pounds from 2017.
