Exploring issues,
creating solutions together
PNNL takes a holistic approach to its national security work, understanding that solutions to nonproliferation challenges are multifaceted, and require the perspectives of scientists, engineers, and experts in policy, economics, and international affairs. In addition to its staff, PNNL routinely engages a broad, multidisciplinary range of stakeholders to explore innovative ideas and emerging issues and build integrated solutions.
With leading researchers, sponsors, and collaborators at the table, PNNL examines complex and evolving national security technology and policy issues worldwide. Together, we ask the challenging questions about what might be over the horizon:
- What current threats pose continuing or new challenges to national and global security?
- What emerging threats will pose new challenges, and how can we best understand the multifaceted nature of these threats?
- How can the science, technology, and policy communities make focused investments and deploy robust solutions to best prepare the nation against future harm?
We draw on our fundamental strengths in science and technology, information analytics and data visualization, economics and international relations, and regional and country-specific expertise to conduct technical feasibility studies, perform cost and benefit analyses, and evaluate implications of current and emerging technologies to better understand the threat landscape.
In addition to its stakeholder engagement efforts, PNNL takes its stewardship responsibility as a national repository of technical expertise very seriously, and seeks opportunities to cultivate and develop next-generation leaders through internal investments and student outreach and education, and to attract a diverse and talented workforce to tackle the most difficult mission challenges.
PNNL delivers efficient and effective mission accomplishment by bringing best-in-class science and technology capabilities to the larger nonproliferation mission, and by taking a leading role in many critical nonproliferation areas.
PNNL also operates the Northwest Regional Technology Center, a virtual resource to support local and regional preparedness, resiliency, response, and recovery. The center enables homeland security solutions for emergency responder communities; federal, state, and local agencies; and private sector stakeholders in the Northwest.
