Naval History and Heritage Command

The Naval History and Heritage Command has commemorated the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Navy's experiences in World War II since 2016, with the anniversary of the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, and will continue through 2020, culminating with the anniversary of the Japanese surrender ceremony aboard USS Missouri (BB-63) on 2 September 1945. Throughout the multi-year commemoration, material will be added to these webpages on a regular basis with the ultimate goals of:

  • Honoring the history and heritage of the U.S. Navy during World War II.
  • Recognizing the contributions of Navy veterans, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • Educating the American public on the importance of the U.S. Navy in defending the United States through the context of Navy actions during the war.

Within this section you will be able to view photographs, art, artifacts, personal experience vignettes, archival material, and publications covering all aspects of the Navy’s experiences during the war. The chronologically arranged webpages will be augmented with material in advance of upcoming anniversaries. The material will highlight the important events associated with operations in the all wartime theaters of operations and on the home front.
