Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1)

Team science can achieve outcomes that may not be possible through the efforts of individual laboratories. The NIGMS Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1) supports groups of three to six principal investigators to pursue research problems of sufficient scope and complexity that they could not be accomplished through individual or multiple PI R01 applications. The RM1 mechanism supports a single, well-integrated program of research with a unified set of specific aims and without subprojects. The research program must be central to NIGMS mission areas and be of sufficient impact to warrant the Institute's investment of significant funds. The program requires the participation of multiple investigators with complementary expertise to achieve the team's research objectives. Although ambitious, the program must have well-defined goals that can be achieved within 5-10 years.

This program can support teams of researchers located at a single institution or multiple institutions throughout the United States. The program vision is of a fully integrated team of investigators with shared management responsibility. NIGMS encourages teams that include Early Stage Investigators as well as investigators who represent all dimensions of diversity [PDF]. Teams have the option to add Early Stage Investigators with complementary expertise to the program as the work progresses.
