2020 Platinum Proof Coin – Pursuit of Happiness
The current three-year platinum coin series takes its inspiration from a document that has had a profound impact on so many Americans. The words “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” have resonated for more than 240 years in the hearts and minds of the American people. Each year, the obverse (heads) of the coins illustrates one of these three themes. The inscriptions “Life,” “Liberty,” and “Happiness” are likenesses of the handwritten words from the Declaration of Independence.
A delightful finale to the series, the 2020 Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin – Pursuit of Happiness, presents Lady Liberty in the midst of the good things that nourish the body, enliven the mind, and satisfy the soul—home, an overflowing cornucopia, fertile fields, fruitful trees, and a child pursuing her own dream. The inscription “Happiness” is a facsimile of the handwritten word from the Declaration of Independence itself. The common reverse (tails) design for this series depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons.
2019 Platinum Proof Coin - Liberty
The 2019 depiction of Lady Liberty on the obverse symbolizes her namesake by evoking the ideals that defined this Nation. The design features Liberty keeping watch over prairies, lakes, and mountains as pioneers make their way west. The wild terrain detailed on the coin represents the deeply-rooted American will to explore and pursue new ideals and ways of life. Liberty herself stands with parted lips, embodying freedom of speech, while her torch shines with the light of liberty and her open book signifies the rule of law. The common reverse (tails) design for this series depicts an eagle in flight with an olive branch in its talons.
2018 Platinum Proof Coin - Life
The first coin in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence series is also available. This design features “Life” personified by Lady Liberty teaching a small child to sow seeds in a field. The sword she carries symbolizes the power to defend life. The furrowed Earth represents the forethought and labor required to sustain life. The tree and stream represent nature, suggesting the need to be good stewards of an environment that sustains life. Each coin in the series compliments each other to create an inspiring, cohesive set.
United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Justin Kunz produced the obverse designs for the series while designer Patricia Lucas-Morris created the common reverse design.
