Transit Benefit Policy

Overview

The US Department of Transportation is designated the Executive Agent to promulgate policy and establish uniform standards for the Federal Transit Benefit program.  The Executive Agent provides government-wide oversight and guidance ensuring consistent application of transit benefit policy and operations, where practicable.

The Executive Agent coordinates the activities of executive departments and agencies regarding Federal transit benefit programs, such as transportation in a commuter highway vehicle, transit passes, qualified parking, and bicycle benefits while also looking to the future to expand commuting options.  This includes prescribing policies and guidelines, furnishing technical information, and publishing regulations in an integrated and effective manner to continue to encourage Federal employees’ use of mass transportation and van pools.  The reduction of single occupancy vehicles from the road is an integral component to reducing traffic congestion, strengthening the investment in our Nation’s infrastructure by reducing vehicle strain on roads and bridges, and reducing emissions.
