NIDA and other HHS scientists have found that opioids are driving an increase in cocaine overdose deaths. A data review from CDC’s National Vital Statistics System showed that cocaine-related overdose deaths increased after 2010, despite decreased cocaine use. The scientists found that this latest increase was linked to cocaine-related overdose deaths involving opioids, primarily heroin or synthetic opioids. NIDA Deputy Director Wilson Compton was an author.

NIDA-funded study by University of Michigan shows that teen vaping is a significant predictor of future cigarette smoking.


Twelfth graders who had never previously smoked, but who had used an e-cigarette at least once within the past 30 days, were more than four times as likely to say that they had smoked a cigarette by the follow up survey.
