Published in June 2020, this outcomes document reflects the progress and outcomes achieved by NIGMS in implementing its strategic plan over the previous 5 years. The report includes descriptions of key results and outcomes data for each aspect of the NIGMS 2015-2020 strategic plan.

Issued in March 2015, the current strategic plan outlines many of the priorities, goals, and objectives that the Institute will pursue. The plan, which incorporates input from the scientific community, is designed as a framework to codify and focus Institute activities, while still allowing the flexibility to pursue untapped opportunities in areas relevant to the NIGMS mission.

This strategic plan was the result of a comprehensive consultation process that began in the fall of 2006 and solicited broad input from scientists, policymakers, scientific and professional societies, and the public. The Institute issued the final strategic plan in January 2008 and produced a progress report [PDF, 526KB] in January 2013.

NIGMS Strategic Plan for Research Training [PDF]

In the spring of 2010, NIGMS launched a strategic planning process to examine existing activities and articulate strategies to help build and sustain the workforce that the nation needs for improving health and global competitiveness. The final strategic plan for biomedical and behavioral research training was released in April 2011. In February 2012, the Institute issued a blueprint for implementation of the strategic plan and created a site where it has posted additional resources for optimizing the research training partnership between NIGMS and academia.
