Oil prices expected to rise to $49 per barrel in 2021 mp3
Date: December 8, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $43 per barrel in November, up three dollars from October. Brent prices increased in November partly because markets anticipated increased demand after news about the reported effectiveness of multiple COVID-19 vaccines and partly because of market expectations that OPEC+ (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partner countries) would delay or limit the production increases planned for January 2021. In the December Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates Brent crude oil spot prices will average $49 per barrel in 2021, up from the average of $43 per barrel in the fourth quarter of 2020. EIA's higher forecast crude oil price for 2021 reflects our expectation that global oil inventories will fall as oil demand rises and the OPEC+ announcement that followed its December 3 meeting that they will limit production increases planned for January 2021. Despite EIA's forecast of higher crude oil prices in early 2021, EIA expects high global oil inventory levels and surplus crude oil production capacity will limit upward pressure on oil prices through much of 2021.

U.S. electricity fuel mix continues to shift mp3
Date: December 8, 2020
Description: In its December Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts electricity generation in the United States will increase by 0.6% in 2021 after a 3.1% decline in 2020. EIA expects the share of utility-scale electricity generated from natural gas will decrease from 39% in 2020 to 34% in 2021 as a result of rising natural gas prices of nearly a dollar per million British thermal units. Coal's share increases from 20% in 2020 to 24% in 2021. Electricity generation from renewable energy sources rises from a share of 20% in 2020 to 21% in 2021. The nuclear share of U.S. generation remains close to 20% through the end of 2021. The increase in the share of renewable electric generation is the result of planned additions to wind and solar generating capacity. EIA estimates the U.S. power sector will add 23 gigawatts of wind turbine generating capacity in 2020, which is more than the previous record of 13.4 gigawatts added in 2012. The U.S. power sector will add 9.5 gigawatts of new wind capacity in 2021. Expected utility-scale solar capacity rose by 12.8 gigawatts in 2020 and will rise by 14.0 gigawatts in 2021.

Oil prices expected to remain near $40 per barrel through the end of 2020 mp3
Date: November 10, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that spot prices for international benchmark Brent crude oil averaged $40 per barrel in October, down $1 per barrel from September. Prices fell in October as previously disrupted crude oil production in Libya came back online and economic concerns arose as worldwide COVID-19 cases began to increase. Nevertheless, EIA expects global oil inventories to continue falling in the coming months. Despite falling inventories, high global inventory levels and surplus crude oil production capacity are expected to limit upward pressure on oil prices. In the November Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates Brent prices will remain near $40 per barrel through the end of 2020. As global oil demand rises, forecast inventory draws in 2021 will likely cause some upward oil price pressures. EIA forecasts Brent crude oil prices will average $47 per barrel in 2021 as rising global oil demand increases inventory draws and puts upward pressure on oil prices.

U.S. coal production expected to increase in 2021 mp3
Date: November 10, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that 521 million short tons of coal will be produced in the United States in 2020, a decline of 26% compared with 2019 levels. We expect U.S. coal production to increase 20% to 627 million short tons in 2021. EIA's forecast of an increase in U.S. coal production in 2021 reflects expected increases in natural gas prices and demand in electric power consumption. In the November Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates U.S. coal consumption in the electric power sector will rise 23% in 2021 after falling 18% from 2019 to 2020. Forecast lower-than-average winter temperatures, especially in the Upper Midwest and Northwest regions of the United States, contribute to the increase in electric power consumption. EIA forecasts that U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020 will be 10% lower than last year because of reduced consumption of all fossil fuels. As a result of less coal consumption, EIA forecasts that U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from coal will be 18% lower in 2020 than in 2019. We expect total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions to rise 6% in 2021 as the economy recovers and consumption increases. We forecast CO2 emissions from coal will be up 21% in 2021 compared with 2020 and CO2 emissions from petroleum, which includes most energy use for air travel and on-road transportation, to be up 9%.

Household expenditures for home heating fuels expected to increase this winter mp3
Date: October 6, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that average household expenditures for all major home heating fuels, except heating oil, will increase this winter largely because of greater energy consumption. In the October Short-Term Energy Outlook EIA estimates that nearly half of all U.S. households primarily using natural gas to heat their home will see a 6% increase in expenditures this winter. A 2% decrease in natural gas prices will be offset by an 8% increase in consumption, resulting in the higher natural gas expenditures this winter. EIA estimates electricity expenditures will increase by 7% and propane expenditures will increase by 14%. In contrast, we expect home heating oil expenditures to fall by 10%, driven primarily by a combination of low crude oil prices and high distillate fuel oil supplies heading into the 2020-21 winter. EIA's higher energy consumption forecast reflects an expectation that the upcoming winter will be colder than last year and that home heating use will increase as a result of more people working and attending school from home during upcoming months. A warmer or colder winter could, of course, change these results, possibly even significantly.

Oil prices decrease as growth in global oil demand slows mp3
Date: October 6, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that spot prices for Brent crude oil averaged $41 per barrel in September, down $4 per barrel from August. The decrease in crude oil prices coincided with slowing global oil demand growth in the third quarter. In EIA's October Short-Term Energy Outlook month-over-month global oil consumption rose an average 1.0 million barrels per day in August and September compared with the 4.2 million barrels per day in May through July. EIA estimates that a shift occurred in global liquid fuel inventories, which grew at a rate of 7.3 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2020 but fell at a rate of 3.1 million barrels per day in the third quarter. Despite expected inventory draws in the coming months, EIA forecasts high inventory levels and surplus crude oil production capacity will limit upward pressure on oil prices, resulting in an average monthly Brent spot price of $42 per barrel in the fourth quarter. We forecast Brent spot prices to average $47 per barrel in 2021.

Oil prices expected to rise in 2021 as markets become more balanced mp3
Date: September 9, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is reporting that European benchmark Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $45 per barrel in August, up $26 per barrel from the multiyear low in April. The increase in oil price occurred as global oil markets shifted from increasing inventories by 7.2 million barrels per day in the second quarter to EIA's expected reduction of inventories of 3.7 million barrels per day in the third quarter. EIA's September Short-Term Energy Outlook forecasts inventory reductions in the fourth quarter will average 3.1 million barrels per day. Despite strong expected inventory draws, EIA expects high inventory levels and surplus crude oil production capacity will limit upward pressure on oil prices in the coming months. EIA estimates Brent prices will average $44 per barrel in the fourth quarter of 2020, then rise to an average of $49 per barrel in 2021 as oil markets become more balanced. EIA expects inventories to be reduced at a rate of 300,000 barrels per day in 2021.

Rise in natural gas prices expected to continue through January 2021 mp3
Date: September 9, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that U.S. benchmark Henry Hub natural gas spot prices averaged $2.30 per million British thermal units in August, up from $1.77 per million British thermal units in July. The price increase reflects rising demand for natural gas from the U.S. electric power sector as a result of warmer-than-normal temperatures during August and rising demand for U.S. liquefied natural gas exports, even as U.S. natural gas production declines. In the September Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that Henry Hub natural gas prices will rise to an average of $3.40 per million British thermal units in January 2021 as a result of increased demand for space heating use in homes and businesses and reduced production heading into winter. However, after a first-quarter peak, EIA expects that monthly Henry Hub spot prices will average $3.19 per million British thermal units in 2021, up more than a dollar from the forecast average of $2.16 per million British thermal units in 2020.

Global liquid fuel supply expected to increase more slowly than demand mp3
Date: August 11, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that global demand for liquid fuels averaged 93.4 million barrels per day in July 2020. Demand was up from the second quarter average of 85 million barrels per day, which had been 15.8 million barrels per day lower than the same time last year. Lower demand in 2020 is the result of responses to COVID-19 including related shutdowns that have occurred throughout much of the world. According to EIA's August Short-Term Energy Outlook, global liquid fuels supply averaged 91.8 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2020, down 8.6 million barrels per day from the second quarter of 2019. The decline reflects voluntary production cuts by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and partner countries (OPEC+), along with reductions in drilling activity and production in the United States as a result of low oil prices. Supply of global liquid fuels fell by less than demand in the second quarter of 2020 and will likely increase more slowly. EIA expects supply to reach 99.4 million barrels per day in 2021, about 1.3 million barrels less than in 2019, and demand to reach 100.2 million barrels per day, about 1.1 million barrels less than 2019 levels.

U.S. LNG exports expected to decline through the end of the summer mp3
Date: August 11, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have fallen substantially as international natural gas demand growth has slowed. LNG exports averaged 3.1 billion cubic feet per day in July, down 2.4 billion cubic feet from the second quarter. Declines in global natural gas demand associated with COVID-19 and its mitigation efforts, high natural gas storage inventories in Europe and Asia, and an on-going expansion in LNG liquefaction capacity have contributed to natural gas and LNG prices reaching all-time historical lows. EIA expects exports to remain low in the coming months. In the August Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts U.S. LNG exports will average 5.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2020 and 7.3 billion cubic feet per day in 2021.

Global oil markets rebalancing faster than previously expected mp3
Date: July 7, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that the global oil market continues to rebalance faster than expected. Global consumption of liquid fuels fell more quickly than production earlier this year as economies around the world went into lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The resulting increase in inventory put steep downward pressure on prices. According to EIA's July Short-Term Energy Outlook, the situation in world oil markets continues to shift. EIA estimates that global consumption of petroleum and other liquid fuels was up in June by 10 million barrels per day when compared with April as economies worldwide emerge from lockdown. EIA estimates global supply fell by 12 million barrels per day during the same period as a result of reduced production from OPEC+ and economically driven declines in the United States and Canada. These changes in supply and demand have shifted global oil markets from an estimated 21 million barrels per day of oversupply in April to inventory draws in June. Global oil consumption averaged 16.3 million fewer barrels per day in the second quarter of 2020 compared with the same period in 2019. EIA expects consumption to begin increasing in the third quarter of 2020 and continue increasing through 2021. EIA expects global oil demand to continue to recover through the end of 2021 although EIA's forecast demand of 101.1 million barrels per day in the fourth quarter of 2021 is still less than during the same period in 2019.

Natural gas prices expected to rise in 2021 mp3
Date: July 7, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that Henry Hub natural gas spot prices averaged $1.63 per million British thermal units in June, the lowest inflation-adjusted average price since at least 1989. Reduced demand in response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to outweigh the effects of falling natural gas production and are contributing to low natural gas prices. EIA expects these conditions will persist in the coming months and keep the third-quarter average natural gas spot price at $1.65 per million British thermal units. However, EIA expects general upward price pressures to emerge later in 2020 as demand for natural gas increases and production continues to decline, particularly in the fourth quarter when space heating demand rises. In the July Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that Henry Hub spot prices will average $2.46 per million British thermal units in the fourth quarter of 2020, bringing the 2020 annual average to $1.93 per million British thermal units. EIA estimates U.S. dry natural gas production will decline a further 5.5% next year, continuing to put upward pressure on prices through the end of 2021. EIA expects Henry Hub prices will average $3.10 per million British thermal units in 2021.

Crude oil prices expected to rise as demand increases and inventories decline mp3
Date: June 9, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is reporting that Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $29 per barrel in May, up $11 per barrel from April. EIA estimates Brent crude oil spot prices will average $38 per barrel in 2020, an increase compared with last month's outlook. EIA's higher forecast crude oil price for 2020 reflects prices in May rising from their multi-year lows in April. The higher prices were driven by a combination of announced OPEC+ cuts to oil production, declining U.S. crude oil production, and rising oil demand related to relaxed COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. In its June Short Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecast Brent prices will average $37 per barrel during the second half of 2020 and rise to an average of $48 per barrel in 2021. The forecast of rising crude oil prices reflects declining global oil inventories in the second half of 2020 and in 2021. EIA expects that high inventory levels and spare crude oil production capacity will limit upward price pressures in the coming months, but as inventories decline into 2021, those upward price pressures will increase.

U.S. electricity generation from natural gas expected to reach record level in 2020 as renewables surpass coal mp3
Date: June 9, 2020
Description: In its June Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts a 6.3% decline in the generation of electricity in the United States this year. Nevertheless, U.S. electricity generation from natural gas grows to a record high of 1,505 billion kilowatthours in 2020 as a result of low natural gas prices. In the Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that the share of U.S. utility-scale electricity generation from natural gas will increase from 37% in 2019 to 41% in 2020. The natural gas share declines to 36% in 2021 as natural gas prices increase. Coal's share falls from 24% in 2019 to 17% in 2020 and then increases to 20% in 2021. Electricity generation from renewable energy sources rises from a share of 17% last year to 21% in 2020 and to 23% in 2021. If this forecast is realized, 2020 would mark the first year on record that renewable electricity generation surpasses coal.

U.S. oil production continues to decline mp3
Date: May 12, 2020
Description: In the May 2020 update of its Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reduced its forecast for U.S. oil production as a result of the recent steep drop in oil price. EIA forecasts that U.S. crude oil production will average 11.7 million barrels per day in 2020, down 0.5 million barrels per day from 2019. This result would mark the first annual decline since 2016. EIA expects a further decline of 0.8 million barrels per day in 2021. EIA expects the steepest decline in U.S. oil production to take place in the second quarter of 2020. U.S. production will continue to decline at a slower rate reaching 10.7 million barrels per day in March 2021 before rising modestly through the remainder of 2021. EIA expects this decline in production in 2020 and 2021, combined with an increase in U.S. consumption of liquid fuels, will result in the United States once again importing more crude oil and petroleum products than it exports in most months through the end of 2021, after recently becoming a net exporter of crude and petroleum products.

Natural gas prices expected to rise in 2021 as consumption recovers faster than production mp3
Date: May 12, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is reporting that Henry Hub natural gas spot prices averaged $1.73 per million British thermal units in April, the lowest since March 2016. Mild winter weather and lower demand for natural gas in the power industrial sector have contributed to larger-than-average inventories thus far in the 2020 injection season, which began on April 1. As a result, EIA expects natural gas prices to remain low through the summer months. Later in the year, EIA expects slowing natural gas production, combined with increased industrial demand and higher winter demand for space heating, to lead to an increase in price. In its May Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that Henry Hub natural gas spot prices will average $2.14 per million British thermal units in 2020 and $2.89 per million British thermal units in 2021.

United States will return to importing more crude oil and petroleum products than it exports mp3
Date: April 7, 2020
Description: In the April Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that the United States will again become a net importer of crude oil and petroleum products in the third quarter of 2020 and remain a net importer in most months through 2021. More net imports of crude oil and less net exports of petroleum products drove this change. EIA expects net crude oil imports to increase because as U.S. crude oil production declines, fewer barrels will be available for export. Net exports of petroleum products will be lowest in the third quarter of 2020, when U.S. refinery runs will decline significantly because of lower demand for refined products. In September 2019, the United States exported more crude oil and petroleum products than it imported for the first month since records began in 1973. EIA previously expected the United States to continue as a net exporter in most months through 2021. However, as a result of recent significant changes in global oil market dynamics, EIA now expects U.S. imports and exports will be even in 2020. It is important to note that the April outlook is subject to heightened levels of uncertainty because the impacts of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease on energy markets are evolving.

Decreased demand and increased supply lead to significant increases in global liquid fuels inventories mp3
Date: April 7, 2020
Description: As a result of the global economic slowdown related to COVID-19, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that global petroleum and liquids consumption will average 95.5 million barrels per day in 2020, down 5.2 million barrels per day from 2019. EIA forecasts that U.S. oil consumption will decline 6.5% in 2020 to average 19.1 million barrels per day, which would be the largest percentage decline in U.S. consumption since 1980. At the same time, in its April 2020 Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects global oil supply to increase in the coming months from first-quarter 2020 levels. Total world liquids supply will average 98.7 million barrels per day through the third quarter of 2020. These supply and demand developments are contributing to a significant increase in liquid fuels inventories. EIA estimates that second-quarter 2020 global petroleum inventories will increase an average 11.4 million barrels per day. Within the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the most stocks recorded in historical data were in July 2016 at 3.1 billion barrels. EIA forecasts inventories will surpass this level as production continues to outpace consumption. EIA expects these large stock builds will put downward pressure on crude oil prices for several months. Brent crude oil prices averaged 32 dollars per barrel in March, the lowest monthly average since January 2016. EIA forecasts Brent crude oil to average 23 dollars per barrel during the second quarter of 2020 before increasing to an average 46 dollars per barrels in 2021.

U.S. total electricity generation expected to decline in 2020 mp3
Date: April 7, 2020
Description: In its April Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that U.S. electricity generation will decline by 3% in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 related economic slowdown. Most new generating capacity built in 2020 will use renewable energy sources. EIA expects renewable generation to grow by 11% in 2020. Although EIA expects renewable energy to be the fastest growing source of U.S. electric generation in 2020, the economic slowdown will reduce the total amount of new generating capacity over the next few months. The electric power sector will add 19.4 gigawatts of new wind capacity and 12.6 gigawatts of utility-scale solar capacity in 2020. These annual wind and solar capacity additions are 5% and 10% less, respectively, than EIA forecast in its March outlook. This update combined with EIA's forecast lower overall electricity demand, leads to a decline in U.S. fossil fuel generation, especially at coal-fired power plants. EIA expects that coal generation will fall by 20% in 2020.

U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide emissions to decrease by 7.5% in 2020 mp3
Date: April 7, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration is forecasting that U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) will decrease by 7.5% in 2020, driven by the economic slowdown and restrictions on business and travel activity related to COVID-19. This follows a 2.7% decrease in emissions in 2019. EIA forecasts that energy-related CO2 emissions will then increase by 3.6% in 2021. In its April Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates that in 2020, CO2 emissions from petroleum will decrease 7% and from coal will decrease 18.4%. EIA creates estimates of energy-related CO2 emissions based on energy consumption and on the amounts of CO2 that are released when different fuels are burned. Total CO2 emissions depend on total energy consumption and the fuel mix of the energy consumed. When it is burned, coal creates the most CO2 of the major fossil fuels. However, because more petroleum products (such as motor gasoline) are consumed than coal, petroleum is the largest source of CO2 emissions in the United States. Natural gas is the least carbon-intensive fossil fuel, but in recent years, because of its increasing consumption, it generates more U.S. CO2 emissions than coal. Non-fossil fuels such as nuclear power and renewable generation emit no direct CO2 at the end use. As these noncarbon generation sources increasingly enter the fuel mix, energy demand can be met without a proportional increase in energy-related CO2.

More OPEC supply and less global liquid fuels demand puts downward pressure on prices mp3
Date: March 11, 2020
Description: In its March 2020 update, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) significantly revised its Short-Term Energy Outlook for global oil supply, demand, and prices compared with the February Short-Term Energy Outlook. These updates largely resulted from updated data and assumptions about the effects of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on global oil demand and assumptions regarding the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) crude oil production following its meeting on March 6. EIA now forecasts that OPEC will target market share instead of a balanced global oil market. As a result, EIA expects that OPEC crude oil production will increase to an average 29.1 million barrels per day in the second and third quarters of 2020. EIA forecasts that global demand for liquid fuels will grow by 0.4 million barrels per day from 2019 to 2020, down from the 1.0 million barrels per day increase EIA previously forecasted in February. The revised March estimate is driven by EIA's expectations of slowing economic growth, primarily related to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak. EIA expects the decline in global liquid fuels demand, combined with the increase in OPEC production, to result in significant global oil inventory builds in the first half of 2020-putting continued downward pressure on prices. EIA forecasts Brent oil prices will average 43 dollars per barrel in 2020 and 55 dollars per barrel in 2021.

U.S. monthly natural gas production expected to decline through 2020 mp3
Date: March 11, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that U.S. dry natural gas production will average 95.3 billion cubic feet per day in 2020, up 3% from 2019. However, EIA expects monthly production to generally decline through 2020, falling from an estimated 96.3 billion cubic feet per day in January to 92.3 billion cubic feet per day in December. Most of the decline in production will occur in the Appalachian and Permian regions. In the Appalachian region, low natural gas prices are discouraging drilling for natural gas. In the Permian, low oil prices are expected to reduce the associated production of natural gas from wells drilled to produce oil. In its March Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that U.S. dry natural gas production will average 92.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2021, down 3% from 2020. This would be the first decline in average annual natural gas production since 2016.

Crude oil markets face ongoing uncertainties mp3
Date: February 11, 2020
Description: Events in January contributed to ongoing uncertainty in crude oil markets, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. On January 6, Brent crude oil prices closed at $70 per barrel following U.S. military operations in Iraq, the highest price since May 2019. However, as tensions in the Middle East de-escalated and market concerns over a related oil supply disruption faded, crude oil prices fell. The outbreak of the coronavirus and subsequent travel bans significantly disrupted transportation-related oil demand in China as well as other countries. This accelerated the decline in crude oil prices, despite ongoing crude oil supply disruptions in Libya. Prices closed at $54 per barrel on February 4, the lowest level since December 2018. In the February Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates the Brent crude oil price will average $58 per barrel during the first half of the year and rise to $64 per barrel during the second half of the year. Brent crude oil spot prices are expected to average $61 per barrel for 2020 as a whole.

Elevated U.S. natural gas working inventories puts downward pressure on prices mp3
Date: February 11, 2020
Description: Henry Hub natural gas spot prices averaged $2.02 per million British thermal units in January according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Typically, January natural gas prices are among the highest of the year; however, warmer-than-normal January temperatures across much of the northern hemisphere contributed to the lowest average January spot price in many years. After beginning 2018 and 2019 with low U.S. working natural gas inventories, EIA forecasted that normal winter temperatures in the first quarter of 2020, along with production growth, would bring total inventories back over the five-year average this winter. So far this winter, temperatures have actually been warmer than normal, and EIA estimates that in January there were 18% fewer heating degree days in the United States than the prior ten-year average. As a result of reduced space heating demand, U.S. natural gas working inventories ended January 9% above the five-year average, higher than previously forecasted. In its February Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA forecasts that at the close of the April-October injection season, working inventories will reach almost 4.1 trillion cubic feet on October 31, which would be the highest end-of-October inventory record on level. Expecting inventories to remain elevated as winter heating season winds down, EIA forecasts that Henry Hub natural gas prices will average $2.21 per million British thermal units in 2020, down from $2.57 per million British thermal units in 2019. In 2021, EIA expects natural gas prices to increase, reaching an average annual price of $2.53 per million British thermal units.

U.S. crude oil production poised for record-setting 2020 and 2021 mp3
Date: January 14, 2020
Description: In December 2019, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and a group of other oil producers announced they were deepening the production cuts originally announced in December 2018. However, the U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that global oil production will rise in 2020 despite the cuts, as expected growth in non-OPEC crude oil production will offset OPEC's reduced output. Non-OPEC production will be driven by continued growth in the United States. Outside of the United States, growing crude oil production in Brazil, Norway, and Canada will also contribute to supply growth over the next 24 months. In its January Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA reports that U.S. crude oil production in 2019 hit a record annual average of 12.2 million barrels per day. EIA forecasts U.S. production will reach 13.3 million barrels per day in 2020 and 13.7 million barrels per day in 2021. Most of the production growth occurs in the Permian region of Texas and New Mexico.

U.S. electricity fuel mix continues to shift mp3
Date: January 14, 2020
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported continuing changes to the fuel mix for U.S. electricity generation. Over the past decade, the share of U.S. electricity generation supplied by natural gas-fired power plants increased from 23% of total generation in 2010 to an estimated 37% in 2019. This increase was offset by a reduction in the share of generation from coal-fired power plants from 46% in 2010 to an estimated 24% in 2019. EIA expects the share of coal generation to continue its decline to 21% in 2020, while natural gas's share of generation stabilize between 37% and 38% in 2020 and 2021 as renewable energy sources continue to gain market share. In its January Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimated that the expected share of generation from renewable sources will increase from 17% in 2019 to 19% this year and to 22% in 2021. The increase in the renewables share is the result of an increase in electricity generation from wind and solar. The share of generation from hydropower is expected to remain the same through 2021.

U.S. jet fuel consumption during the week of Thanksgiving was about half of last year’s

weekly U.S. product supplied of selected petroleum products
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Weekly Petroleum Status Report

For the week of Thanksgiving 2020, estimated consumption of major transportation fuels (motor gasoline, distillate, and jet fuel) was 11% lower than during Thanksgiving week 2019. About half as much jet fuel was consumed during the week of Thanksgiving as last year, measured using product supplied as a proxy for consumption: 1.1 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2020 compared with 2.0 million b/d in 2019, according to estimates in the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Weekly Petroleum Status Report.
