Oil prices expected to rise to $49 per barrel in 2021 mp3

Brent prices increased in November partly because markets anticipated increased demand after news about the reported effectiveness of multiple COVID-19 vaccines and partly because of market expectations that OPEC+ (the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partner countries) would delay or limit the production increases planned for January 2021. In the December Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates Brent crude oil spot prices will average $49 per barrel in 2021, up from the average of $43 per barrel in the fourth quarter of 2020. EIA's higher forecast crude oil price for 2021 reflects our expectation that global oil inventories will fall as oil demand rises and the OPEC+ announcement that followed its December 3 meeting that they will limit production increases planned for January 2021. Despite EIA's forecast of higher crude oil prices in early 2021, EIA expects high global oil inventory levels and surplus crude oil production capacity will limit upward pressure on oil prices through much of 2021. |

| Description: | In its December Short-Term Energy Outlook, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts electricity generation in the United States will increase by 0.6% in 2021 after a 3.1% decline in 2020. EIA expects the share of utility-scale electricity generated from natural gas will decrease from 39% in 2020 to 34% in 2021 as a result of rising natural gas prices of nearly a dollar per million British thermal units. Coal's share increases from 20% in 2020 to 24% in 2021. Electricity generation from renewable energy sources rises from a share of 20% in 2020 to 21% in 2021. The nuclear share of U.S. generation remains close to 20% through the end of 2021. The increase in the share of renewable electric generation is the result of planned additions to wind and solar generating capacity. EIA estimates the U.S. power sector will add 23 gigawatts of wind turbine generating capacity in 2020, which is more than the previous record of 13.4 gigawatts added in 2012. The U.S. power sector will add 9.5 gigawatts of new wind capacity in 2021. Expected utility-scale solar capacity rose by 12.8 gigawatts in 2020 and will rise by 14.0 gigawatts in 2021. |

We expect U.S. coal production to increase 20% to 627 million short tons in 2021. EIA's forecast of an increase in U.S. coal production in 2021 reflects expected increases in natural gas prices and demand in electric power consumption. In the November Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates U.S. coal consumption in the electric power sector will rise 23% in 2021 after falling 18% from 2019 to 2020. Forecast lower-than-average winter temperatures, especially in the Upper Midwest and Northwest regions of the United States, contribute to the increase in electric power consumption. EIA forecasts that U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions in 2020 will be 10% lower than last year because of reduced consumption of all fossil fuels. As a result of less coal consumption, EIA forecasts that U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from coal will be 18% lower in 2020 than in 2019. We expect total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions to rise 6% in 2021 as the economy recovers and consumption increases. In contrast, we expect home heating oil expenditures to fall by 10%, driven primarily by a combination of low crude oil prices and high distillate fuel oil supplies heading into the 2020-21 winter. EIA's higher energy consumption forecast reflects an expectation that the upcoming winter will be colder than last year and that home heating use will increase as a result of more people working and attending school from home during upcoming months. Natural gas is the least carbon-intensive fossil fuel, but in recent years, because of its increasing consumption, it generates more U.S. CO2 emissions than coal. Non-fossil fuels such as nuclear power and renewable generation emit no direct CO2 at the end use. As these noncarbon generation sources increasingly enter the fuel mix, energy demand can be met without a proportional increase in energy-related CO2. |
