HPC Requirements Reviews
In support of its mission and to maintain its reputation as one of the best run scientific computing centers in the world, NERSC continually gathers requirements from its user community, the DOE Office of Science program offices, and from other key HPC or domain experts.
The first set of reviews ran from May 2009 through May 2011 and resulted in the publication of six reports detailing the needs of the DOE program offices through 2014. The second set of reviews set forth requirements for 2017. After the second set, the NERSC reviews were expanded to include the Office of Science HPC facilities at Argonne and Oak Ridge and resulted in the DOE Exascale Requirements Reviews, which produced six reports and a summary cross-cutting report in December 2017.

The DOE Exascale Requirements Reviews seek to determine the requirements for an exascale ecosystem that includes computation, data analysis, software, workflows, high-performance computing (HPC) services, and other programmatic or technological elements that may be needed to support forefront scientific research. NERSC and the Office of Advanced Computational Research held six program requirements reviews with each DOE Office of Science program office from 2012 to 2014 to determine what scientists and their teams need in order to meet DOE mission requirements in 2017.
