The Role

The Deputy Secretary of Defense is in charge of the Defense Department’s day-to-day business. The primary responsibility is managing the defense budget and executing the defense secretary’s priorities.

The Person

David L. Norquist was sworn in as the 34th Deputy Secretary of Defense on July 31, 2019. He was appointed as the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller)/Chief Financial Officer on June 2, 2017, and served as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense on all budgetary and financial matters. He has 30 years of experience in federal financial management and national security.
