About the Office

PHMSA’s Office of Hazardous Materials Safety carries out a national safety program, including security matters, to protect against the risks to life and property inherent in the transportation of hazardous materials in commerce by all transportation modes. 

Office of Hazardous Materials Divisions

Policy and Programs

The Office of the Deputy Associate Administrator for Policy and Programs supports PHMSA’s mission by developing, proposing, and implementing regulatory policy initiatives and regulations governing the safe and secure transportation of hazardous materials.  The office also directs education and outreach efforts designed to promote the adoption and increased use of safety programs, in addition to providing hazardous materials transportation security and technical assistance to state and local governments in their efforts to enhance public safety.

Field Operations

The Office of the Deputy Associate Administrator for Field Operations supports PHMSA’s mission through administering a national hazardous materials safety inspection and enforcement program.  The office is responsible for providing executive direction, policy, and national coordination for regional operations and security for hazardous materials shipments.
