End-of-Life Care
End-of-life care (ELC) is considered care that's given when an individual has chosen to discontinue treatment to cure or control their disease, and is nearing the end of their life. ELC can include physical, emotional, social, and spiritual support for patients and for their families. The goal of ELC is to control pain and other symptoms so the patient can be as comfortable as possible. Palliative care, supportive care, and hospice care are all part of ELC. HSR&D investigators study all aspects of end-of-life care—from delivery of hospice care to Veterans living in rural communities to policy impacts to emotional support for Veterans and their caregivers.
