Research at the Northern Research Station
Research Themes
Forest Disturbance Processes
Protect people and forest landscapes from the threat of undesirable disturbances
Urban Natural Resource Stewardship
Improve the quality of life in urban areas through natural resources stewardship
Sustaining Forests
Maintain and enhance forest productivity and benefits
Providing Clean Water and Air
Increase production of clean water and air for a growing population
Natural Resources Inventory, Monitoring, and Assessment
Establish baselines, track change, quantify threats, demonstrate effectiveness, prioritize research efforts, and understand our natural resources, and the policies, practices, and processes that impact them.
Research Units
Research Lands
Research Natural Areas
Research Natural Areas (RNAs) are areas that the Forest Service has designated to be permanently protected and maintained in a natural condition.
Experimental Forests
The USDA Forest Service's Experimental Forests (EF) are dedicated to long-term research on ecosystem processes, silviculture and forest management options, wildlife habitat characteristics, and forest growth and development.
Research Facilities
Rhizotron
A Rhizotron [Greek, from rhiza, root] is an enclosure or exclosure with at least one transparent panel that allows for non-invasive viewing of underground processes, specifically root systems.
Quarantine Facility
The USDA Forest Service Quarantine Facility in Ansonia, Connecticut, is utilized to confine arthropod pests and their biological control agents for biological control research.
Special Programs
Eastern Area Modeling Consortium
The Eastern Area Modeling Consortium (EAMC) is one of five consortia members of the national Fire Consortia for Advanced Modeling of Meteorology and Smoke (FCAMMS) established in 2001 by the U.S. National Fire Plan.
Environmental Literacy Program
The mission of the Northern Research Station Environmental Literacy Program is to integrate Forest Service Research results and sound scientific practices into local, regional, and national environmental literacy efforts.
National Inventory & Monitoring Applications Center
The National Inventory and Monitoring Applications Center (NIMAC) is a program with national scope, based at the headquarters office of the US Forest Service's Northern Research Station.
Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science
The Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science develops synthesis products, fosters communication, and pursues science in the following focus areas: Climate change, Carbon science and management, and Bioenergy.
Urban Field Stations
More than 80 percent of the U.S. population lives in urban areas, where Northern Research Station science is helping local government understand the myriad of ways that urban forests contribute to human health and wellbeing.
