Surface Transportation Board

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) is an independent establishment of the United States Government, not part of the Department of Transportation. In order to prevent and detect fraud and abuse, Congress granted the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation the authority to review only the financial management, property management, and business operations of the STB, including internal accounting and administrative control systems, to determine STB's compliance with applicable Federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prior to the Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act of 2015, the Board was part of the Department of Transportation and was audited and investigated by OIG under the Inspector General Act.
