Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the passing of former DNC and South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Don Fowler:

“Don Fowler was a legendary leader and hero of South Carolina politics, and his passing is heartbreaking news for the countless Americans in his home state and across the country with whom he served.

“Don was a political maestro of great brilliance, who was a driving force in shaping the Democratic Party and the modern political landscape for decades.  He was distinguished for his character and compassion and was beloved for his lifelong commitment to mentoring, teaching and inspiring the next generation of public servants and political leaders.  Don never stopped finding ways to give back to his country, whether serving for 30 years as an active duty officer and reservist in the Army, by co-founding the DNC Veterans and Military Families Council, or educating young people as a revered professor at the University of South Carolina.

“Personally, I served with Don since we were state party chairs together and respected his tireless work for civil rights, for democratic values and for South Carolina to have a prominent role in national politics.  He welcomed everyone into a big tent with an open heart.

“May it be a comfort to Don’s wife Carol, his children Donnie and Sissy, and the entire Fowler family that so many across America mourn their loss and are praying for them at this sad time.”
