The NIF & Photon Science Directorate has a rich history at LLNL, with more than 50 years of experience in building and operating the world’s largest and highest-energy laser systems and pursuing pioneering science and engineering in lasers, optics, and photon science. NIF&PS employees also participate in cutting-edge Discovery Science research, ranging from lab-based astrophysics experiments to explorations of unique phases of materials under unprecedented pressures and temperatures.
