Argonne Site Access

Argonne National Laboratory is a controlled-access facility. You will need a visitor’s gate pass or a user photo badge to enter the Argonne campus. PLEASE NOTE: A reservation at the Argonne Guest House does NOT guarantee your site access!

You must notify us of your visit in advance. When you arrive, you will be asked to present your identification documents, and then you will be given your gate pass or badge. You can then come and go freely during the period your pass or badge is valid. You must wear your pass or badge visibly at all times while on site. Do not wear your badge while offsite and never permit your badge to be photographed or filmed.

See Travel & Visitors section on homepage for site access for individuals not conducting hands-on research.

Important: Please ensure that you have received all necessary confirmations of site access approval from the User Office before you travel to Argonne.

Site Access for Users

  1. New users: Register at the user registration login to be assigned a badge number. Returning users: check your registration information to ensure that it is current.

  2. Notify the APS of your arrival/departure dates on the "Gate Pass Request" tab in My APS Portal (APS badge number required to log in). If you have a valid user photo badge, a gate pass request is NOT required. Bring your user photo badge for site access. Expired badges will not grant you site access.

  3. Verify you are covered by a user agreement between the institution covering your work and Argonne National Laboratory. Electronically acknowledge the agreement on the "User Agreement" tab in My APS Portal.

  4. Obtain and bring the appropriate identification documents.

  5. Complete the core safety training listed in your profile in My APS Portal.

  6. User photo badges are ONLY made M-F from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Argonne Information Center (see 200 Area on the map).

  7. If you will be arriving before 6:30 a.m. or after 5 p.m. M-F or over the weekend, go to Main Gate guard post (see 200 Area on the map) to pick up your gate pass.

  8. Proceed to APS User Office (see 400 Area on the map) to have a new user photo badge activated for APS building access (Building 401, first floor, M-F 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Note that gate passes are NOT activated for building access.
