On July 24, 2000, in view of their long standing and close cooperation in law enforcement regarding their mutual interest in combating transnational crime, the United States and the Botswana governments entered into an agreement for establishing an International Law Enforcement Academy that provides training for middle managers from eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Since 1995, FLETC has participated in the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) Program. ILEA academies are located in Hungary, Thailand, Botswana, El Salvador, New Mexico, and the West Africa Regional Training Center in Accra, Ghana.

In addition to providing instructors for the core and specialized programs at each of the ILEAs, the FLETC has personnel assigned as the Director of ILEA Gaborone who provides oversight and program management.

FLETC's International Training Division (ITD) exports FLETC training programs and provides technical assistance outside the United States on a reimbursable basis when resources allow. To date, ITD has delivered FLETC training programs internationally to a variety of audiences. Working closely with the Embassy or requesting agency, we identify the level of the target audience and then tailor our programs to that level by drawing upon both our professional staff, as well as instructors detailed from over ninety participating federal agencies.

ITD also conducts training needs assessments, coordinates curriculum development, facilitates symposiums and conferences, and provides technical assistance to aid in the design and development of training facilities and the selection, installation, and operation of associated technical equipment.

FLETC international training and technical assistance delivered internationally is fully coordinated with the respective U.S. Embassy.
