Capabilities and solutions

The expertise of the researchers in the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate provides the fundamental knowledge necessary to address the Intelligence Mission. The broad expertise from the five Divisions of PLS contributes to the diverse, multidisciplinary teams that are indispensible to supporting the entire spectrum of the U.S. government's intelligence efforts.

The Nuclear and Chemical Sciences division employs scientists who are recognized experts in chemical, explosive, radiological, and nuclear forensics.
The Biosciences and Biotechnology division supports the Biodefense Knowledge Center (BKC) by providing scientists who develop and deliver enduring knowledge products critical for anticipating, preventing, characterizing, and responding to an attack using biological warfare agents.
The Materials Science division employs scientists to provide key insight into alternate materials solutions to intelligence community needs and gaps.
