Supports specialized colonies of laboratory animals, including nonhuman primates; biological materials; genetic stocks, and animal-related information resources. These resources serve qualified investigators without regard to scientific disciplines or disease orientations of research activities.

Research Career Development and Training Awards NIH Pathway to Independence (PI) Award:
Provides opportunities for promising postdoctoral scientists to receive both mentored and independent research support from the same award. The initial phase will provide 1-2 years of mentored support for highly promising, postdoctoral research scientists, followed by up to 3 years of independent support contingent on securing an independent research position. Award recipients will be expected to compete successfully for independent R01 support from the NIH during the career transition award period.

Supports applied studies to characterize and develop new animal, cell culture, or computer/mathematics models (or to improve existing ones) that have the potential for becoming well-used systems for research projects. Applicants must demonstrate a need for the resource within the biomedical research community.

Supports the acquisition of a major, advanced instrument in the $750,000 to $2,000,000 range (direct costs only). The instrument must be used on a shared basis at institutions with a high concentration of investigators supported by NIH research project grants.

Small Business Award Programs Small Business Innovation Research Awards (SBIR):
Phase I (R43) supports research to establish the technical merit and feasibility of research ideas that may ultimately lead to commercial products or services that will have broad application to biomedical research. Phase I also determines the quality of performance of the small business awardee organization prior to providing further federal support.

Phase II (R44) supports research or research and development (R&D) initiated in Phase I that is likely to result in commercial products or services.

Small Business Award Programs Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR):
Phase I (R41) and Phase II (R42) of the STTR Program seek to increase the commercialization of technology developed through Federal funding that will ultimately benefit the public. However, the unique feature of the STTR Program is the requirement for the small business concern applicant organization to partner and formally collaborate with research universities and other nonprofit research institutions. Important differences between the SBIR and STTR program requirements are explained on the NIH SBIR and STTR Web site.
