NIJ-funded Assessment of SORNA Implementation

Recent research supported by the National Institute of Justice, in collaboration with SMART, measured states’ progress implementing the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), particularly in the areas of standards implementation, public safety effectiveness, and information sharing within and between states and with the federal government.

The First Step Act

The First Step Act of 2018 aims to reform the federal prison system and reduce recidivism. NIJ is working to assess and develop an existing prisoner risk and needs assessment system, and develop recommendations regarding effective evidence-based recidivism reduction programs and activities.
