Dissemination & Implementation (D&I) Research

The NIH supports dissemination and implementation (D&I) research on how evidence-based practices, interventions, and policies are effectively translated to and used in real-world settings like hospitals, schools, and communities.

D&I Frameworks, Theories, and Models

D&I frameworks, theories, and models give researchers a systematic way to understand, use, and evaluate evidence-based interventions in specific settings.

Dissemination & Implementation Models in Health Research and Practice

An interactive website for selecting, adapting, and integrating D&I Models in research and practice, and finding existing measurement instruments for the model constructs.

Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Implementation Guide

A guide that introduces approaches to doing research on implementation, including methods, tools, resources, and more.

Grid-Enabled Measures (GEM) Database – Dissemination and Implementation Initiative (GEM-D&I)

A project that looks to identify the outcomes and associated measures evidence base to inform D&I research and practice, and to create standardized, vetted D&I measures.

Health Services Research Information Central (HSRIC)

A collection of D&I health services research resources, including data, tools, statistics, funding announcements, publications, and more.

    Funding

Interested in funding opportunities or planning to submit an application in D&I research? Use these tools to find what you need:

    Training and Education

Learn about NIH programs to help you prepare for careers in D&I research.

Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health

The Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health (TIDIRH) was developed by the NIH to help build capacity in dissemination and implementation research. Offered annually and hosted by the NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), in coordination with a number of NIH Institutes and Centers and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), TIDIRH provides participants with a thorough grounding in conducting D&I research in health across all areas of health and health care.

Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Cancer

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) hosts the Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Cancer (TIDIRC) to provide participants with a thorough grounding in conducting D&I research with a specific focus on cancer, across the cancer control continuum. Participants are expected to return to their home institutions prepared to share what they have learned to help further the field of D&I research.

    Updated QUERI Implementation Guide

The Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Implementation cyber seminar includes discussion of: (1) implementation research frameworks, theories, and models; (2) how to diagnose a gap and design an intervention; (3) methods used in implementing research into practice; (4) formative evaluation; and (5) tools for implementation.

The Role and Selection of Theoretical Frameworks in Implementation Research

The Enhancing Implementation Science (EIS) cyber seminar (presentation slides, audio, and transcript available for download) highlights the important role of theory in implementation research. Guidelines for applying theory are presented, along with example studies.

Theoretical Frameworks: Rationale, Strengths, and Limitation in Enhancing Successful Implementation

The Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Implementation cyber seminar covers the foundations of implementation theories, theoretical frameworks, and models. Also introduces different types of theories and models, and guidelines for selecting and using theoretical frameworks.

Training Opportunities in Prevention Research Methods: D&I Research

Find seminars, courses, webinars, online tutorials, and more in prevention research methodology, focusing on study design, intervention design, data analysis, and measurement methods.
