Unfortunately, high school student-athletes can be especially vulnerable to prescription painkiller misuse. This poster encourages teens, parents and other caregivers, and educators to know the risks around misusing pain pills.
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant. It is available as a powdery substance as well as in pill form. Another version of the drug is referred to as “crystal meth.” This type of methamphetamine is often smoked and resembles glass fragments or shiny blue-white “rocks.”
Marijuana is a mind-altering psychoactive drug. Dry, shredded, green/brown mix of flowers, stems, seeds and leaves from the cannabis sativa plant. THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the main ingredient that produces the psychoactive effect. Addictive.
K2/Spice is a synthetic cannabinoids, also known as K2 or Spice, are compounds created in laboratories and mimic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main ingredient in marijuana that produces the psychoactive effect.
Heroin is an opiate drug processed from morphine, a substance extracted from opium which is derived from certain poppy plants.
MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, is a synthetic chemical. The popular nickname Molly (slang for molecular) often refers to the supposedly “pure” crystalline powder form of MDMA, usually sold in capsules. However, people who purchase powder or capsules sold as Molly often actually get other drugs such as synthetic cathinones (”bath salts”) instead. It is not safe to use.
DXM is a cough suppressor found in more than 120 over-the-counter (OTC) cold medications. It can be used alone, or in combination with other drugs such as analgesics, antihistamines, decongestants, and/or expectorants.
What is impaired driving? Any amount of a substance that impairs one’s ability to operate a motor vehicle, react in a timely manner, and impairs one’s judgement and attention as to other drivers and vehicles. The most common substances detected in impaired drivers are alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter medications.
