Online Training Resources

The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) has identified training needs in several areas relevant to the behavioral and social sciences.

Good Clinical Practice for Social and Behavioral Research eLearning Course

In September 2016, the NIH issued a Policy on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training for NIH Awardees Involved in NIH-funded Clinical Trials. GCP is an international ethical and scientific quality standard for designing, conducting, recording and reporting clinical trials. The principles of GCP help assure the safety, integrity, and quality of clinical trials. Investigators and clinical trial staff who are competent in GCP principles will be better able to assure that the rights, safety, and well-being of human subjects are protected; that clinical trials are conducted in accordance with approved plans and with rigor and integrity; and that data derived from clinical trials are reliable. For accessibility issues, please contact OBSSRNews@mail.nih.gov.

Mixed Methods Research

The OBSSR commissioned a team in 2010 to develop a resource that would provide guidance to NIH investigators on how to rigorously develop and evaluate mixed methods research applications.

eSource: Introductory Social and Behavioral Science Training Materials

eSource is a collection of online chapters that provides an introduction to selected behavioral and social science research approaches, including theory development and testing, survey methods, measurement, and study design. eSource was developed for OBSSR around 2010 by the New England Research Institute (NERI) with contributions from topic experts. These chapters have not been updated to reflect advances in the past decade, and the exercises are not interactive in PDF format, but OBSSR continues to make these chapters available online until June 30, 2021, for those who wish to use them as supplementary teaching materials. Download these chapter PDFs if you wish to have access to these materials beyond June 30, 2021.
