Working alongside scientists
from around the world

As a STRI academic appointee, Erin Dillon has pioneered methodology
that uses shark scales from modern and fossil reefs to piece together
changes in shark communities over time. Here, she works on a
fossil outcrop in the Dominican Republic during an expedition
with Aaron O’Dea lab.

Working alongside scientists
from around the world

As an intern in the paleontology lab of staff scientist Carlos Jaramillo,
Camila Monje from Bogotá’s Universidad de los Andes, collected fossilized
seeds from trees that lived in modern-day Panama many millions of years ago.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the Internship Program call for proposals have been suspended until further notice.

Overview

Internships provide the opportunity to meet and work with scientists from around the world, gain hands-on experience in academia and research, and delve into Panama’s rich ecosystems and culture. Internships generally involve specific roles within Smithsonian research projects but also encourage interns to bring new ideas and questions to the table. Smithsonian Internships often have a profound impact on young academics at early career stages, and can lead to new research projects at the Smithsonian in Panama.

Before you apply

Internships are intended for undergraduates, recent graduates, and Master's students. Interns are selected based on merit and potential for achievement. However, placement depends upon finding a match between the applicant's interest and a suitable research project overseen by a STRI scientist or research associate. We encourage applicants to directly contact potential supervisors. Staff research profiles and contact information can be found here and a list of research affiliates is on this document starting at page 244. If you are having trouble identifying someone whose research interests align with your own or contacting a scientist, please contact us here.
