Unlocking public access to government data is a critical component of the President's Open Government Initiative because of the role it can play in driving innovation by tapping into the ingenuity of the American people; increasing agency accountability; and changing the default setting of Washington to be open, transparent and participatory.
From the inches of rainfall measured by NOAA's National Weather Service to the complex portrait of our nation completed every ten years by the U.S. Census Bureau, data collection and the public dissemination of that information has played a critical role at the Department of Commerce since its founding. That legacy is why we're fully committed to making our datasets more accessible to regular citizens and developers using the government-wide effort, Data.gov.
On Data.gov, three different kinds of Commerce data sets are available:
Bureau of Industry and Security
International Trade Administration
National Institute of Standards and Technology
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
National Technical Information Service
National Telecommunication and Information Administration
US Patent and Trademark Office
