The 2019 Federal Reserve Payments Study (FRPS), seventh in a series of triennial studies, found accelerating growth overall in core noncash payments from 2015 to 2018 compared to the previous three years. Automated clearinghouse (ACH) and card payments each accelerated, while check continued to decline over the same period.

The study covered general-purpose and private-label credit, debit, and prepaid cards, electronic benefits transfers (EBT) cards, ACH transfers, wire transfers, checks, and some alternative payments. For the most current data, including detailed estimates for 2012 through 2018, see Detailed Data. For more information about the detailed release, see Notes on the Detailed Data.

For more on key findings and an overview of the noncash payments landscape, see the 2019 Federal Reserve Payments Study brief released in December 2019.
