Water trails represent a way to promote use and enjoyment of Michigan’s shoreline and spur economic development.
Michigan Coastal Zone Management Program grants were used to expand the development of trails, access points, and supporting amenities and to document best practices for others to use. Over 3,000 miles of Michigan coastline, inland lakes, and rivers are now included in water trails. Michigan’s governor is a trails champion, and the Michigan Coastal Zone Management Program and its partners are promoting connectivity among water trails and with the broader network of land-based trails in the state.
