Kansas Secretary of Corrections Roger Werholtz today announced that the Department of Corrections has entered into a contract amendment with Embarq™ Payphone Services Inc., a unit of Embarq™ Corp., of Overland Park to improve security and reduce the introduction of contraband, reduce staff time and involvement in screening mail and generate commissions for the KDOC in the areas of inmate trust accounts (banking), mail, and visitation.

MEMORANDUM: Message from the Secretary of Corrections to Staff Regarding Legislative Budget Discussions (April 21, 2009)
This afternoon I appeared before the House Public Safety Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee along with the heads of other public safety agencies. We were asked, in light of the revised revenue projections, to identify how we could reduce the Department’s FY 2010 budget by an additional 5% ($10,800,000).

I am writing to advise you that we have just completed the Department’s budget hearing in the Senate Ways and Means Committee regarding the Fiscal Year 2010 budget which begins July 1, 2009.
NEWS RELEASE: Kansas Department of Corrections Announces Closure of One Housing Unit at Winfield Correctional Facility as Part of Ongoing Budget Reductions (February 11, 2009)
Kansas Secretary of Corrections Roger Werholtz today announced that the 176 capacity “B” Housing Unit at Winfield Correctional Facility (WCF) will be taken off-line effective March 7, 2009 in an effort to meet budget reductions for the current fiscal year. WCF is a minimum security facility with three housing units, designated “A”, “B” and “C”.
NEWS RELEASE: Kansas Department of Corrections Announces Suspension of Offender Programs Effective April 1, 2009 (February 5, 2009)
Kansas Secretary of Corrections Roger Werholtz today announced that the Department has begun the process of suspending a number of facility and community based offender programs in the ongoing effort to reduce the Fiscal Year 2009 budget.
NEWS RELEASE: Kansas Department of Corrections Announces Suspension of Operations at Norton Correctional Facility – East Unit at Stockton Effective April 1, 2009 (February 2, 2009)
Kansas Secretary of Corrections Roger Werholtz today announced that the operations at the Norton Correctional Facility – East Unit will be suspended effective April 1, 2009. Suspending operations at Stockton had previously been scheduled to occur June 30, 2009, but has been advanced in the ongoing effort to reduce the Fiscal Year 2009 budget.
