About Us

The National Drought Mitigation Center’s mission is to reduce the effects of drought on people, the environment and the economy by researching the science of drought monitoring and the practice of drought planning. We collaborate with and learn from decision-makers at all levels – individual ranchers, communities, regions, watersheds, tribes, states, countries – across the US and around the world. We organize and present workshops, writeshops and other capacity-building activities, in close cooperation with local partners.

Who We Are

We are a team of experts whose goal is to mitigate drought and its effects worldwide. Individually, we are climatologists, remote sensing and information technology scientists, sociologists, community and regional planners and developers, geographers, analysts, and communicators. We look forward to matching our expertise with your needs.

Our Partners

Primary Partnerships

The NDMC works with the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) in multiple capacities. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is leading NIDIS, an effort to consolidate federal drought monitoring, early warning and preparedness resources.

A partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of the Chief economist since 2014 has refined and developed tools related to the US Drought Monitor. The USDA’s Risk Management Agency previously provided major support for development of drought decision-making tools.

The National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) is based in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). The NDMC was established at UNL in 1995.
