OSD’s traditional role in support of NOAA’s geostationary satellite systems is to serve as the Nation's civil space resource for observing meteorological events in real time and providing continuous observations and communications services from space. The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) provide a platform for earth environmental and solar observations, data collection and relay, search and rescue, and other services. This oversight was executed by the OSD Geostationary Program office, which worked closely with other elements of NESDIS, other NOAA line offices and NASA to develop program objectives, performance requirements, and milestones, realistic system requirements, acquisition strategies, and implementation plans. With the launch and transition to operations of the last of the legacy GOES spacecraft in 2010, the residual functions of the GOES Program office were folded into to OSD Systems Engineering and Integration Division.
