Coastal Economy

Coastal Michigan employs 1.75 million people annually, earning a total of almost $92 billion. This equates to over $213 billion in gross domestic product.

Natural Hazards

Two billion-dollar weather disasters affected Michigan in 2018—and a total of 15 affected the state between 2010 and 2018. In March 2017, a tornado outbreak accompanied by destructive straight-line winds caused one million people in Michigan to lose power. In August 2014, heavy rainfall in excess of five inches caused significant flooding across the state, damaging thousands of cars, businesses, homes, and other critical infrastructure.*
