8 October 2020 -
STAR's Shobha Kondragunta and collaborators at South Dakota State University
provided data and graphics on the west coast fires to a reporter at Mother Jones.
The reporter requested smoke emissions data for fires in California, Oregon, and
Washington through NESDIS HQ. STAR provided data for the entire 2020 season and
also prepared figures to help the writer better understand the issues. Mother
Jones published the article "These
5 Stats Show Just How Devastating California's
Wildfires Have Been – So Far" on September 24, 2020. The figure at right
shows the scale of the issue and helps explain how unprecedented the fire
emissions have been. Read more.
GOES Team honored with Gears of Government Award
16 September 2020 -
STAR congratulates the winners of the Gears of Government Award.
15 DOC nominations met the program's criteria for the agency-level award, and out of those nominations, one group has been
selected for the prestigious President's Award:
Pam Sullivan (GOES), Dan Lindsey (GOES, formerly STAR),
Harry Cikanek, Joseph Pica (NCEI), and Vanessa Griffin (OSAAP).
This team was recognized for:
"Restoring the functionality of NOAA's new weather satellite
following a visibility defect. The team's innovative
techniques and coordinated approach restored the
satellite's ability to observe critical weather conditions
across the Western Hemisphere, such as hurricanes, fires,
and volcanic activity, with minimal data loss,
restoring the value of the nation's $1 billion investment."Read more
University of Wisconsin to Host new CIMSS
On 29 May 2020 NOAA announced its selection of the University of
Wisconsin - Madison to host NOAA's new Cooperative
Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The selection
was made after an open, competitive evaluation and comes with an award
of up to $150 million over five years, with the potential for renewal
of another five years based on successful performance. Read more.
12 November 2019 - This video was
commissioned by STAR in conjunction with the 70th International Astronautical Congress held in Washington
DC from October 21 to 25 2019. It features STAR Director Harry Cikanek, SMCD Director Satya Kalluri,
STAR Principal Scientist Sid Boukabara, STAR Physical Scientist and altimetry expert Deirdre Byrne and
STAR Physical Scientist and GLM specialist Scott Rudlosky talking about ways that STAR transforms
satellite information into useful products for the Nation and indeed the world.

AI Workshop Brings Together Environmental Science and AI / ML Expert Communities
NOAA hosted the 1st Workshop
on Leveraging AI in the Exploitation of Satellite Earth Observations & Numerical Weather Prediction
at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD on 23-25 April 2019. The objective of the workshop was
to facilitate exchange of knowledge between experts and thought leaders in remote sensing / earth observation /
NWP modeling science and artificial intelligence, to explore using AI to address NOAA's biggest challenges
in effectively using the explosion of data from new Global Observing System sources. Read more about the workshop.
