Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source (ALS) is an electron accelerator/storage ring that serves as one of the world’s premier sources of X-ray and ultraviolet light for scientific research ranging from advanced materials to protein crystallography and 3D biological imaging. As a DOE national user facility, the resources of the ALS are available to qualified users around the world, attracting more than 2000 researchers and students annually.

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it can undergo. Chemical Sciences Division researchers tackle critical scientific issues in chemistry at both the theoretical and experimental levels.

Materials​ ​scientists are advancing the fundamental science of materials within the context of global energy-related challenges. They are developing experimental and theoretical techniques to design, discover and understand materials with novel properties, behavior​ ​and functionalities for a wide range of applications, including solar cells, computer chips and nanoscale devices.

The Molecular Foundry is a nanoscale science research facility that provides users from around the world with access to cutting-edge expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. The Foundry’s broad spectrum of capabilities allow users to increase the scope, depth and impact of their research. The Foundry is made up of seven closely coupled facilities that specialize in nanomaterial synthesis, characterization, theory and fabrication.
