One of DOE’s primary forums for engaging state and local governments is the Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs Office (WIP), which strategically coordinates with state and local leaders to integrate energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and best practices. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are a win-win for state and local governments. Investing in new energy technologies creates vibrant and healthy communities, provides a secure, reliable and resilient source of energy for homes and businesses, and produces well-paying jobs.
What We Do
WIP supports DOE’s strategic objective to lower energy costs while expanding energy choices for all American communities. WIP’s near-term activities produce almost immediate results, saving taxpayer dollars, making full use of domestic energy resources, boosting local economic development and job creation, cutting energy waste, improving energy independence and security, and furthering the development of energy infrastructure. WIP comprises two programs focused on state and local governments, the Weatherization Assistance Program and the State Energy Program.
- Our State Energy Program provides funding to 50 states, 5 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia to enhance energy security, advance state-led energy initiatives, and maximize the benefits of decreasing energy waste.
- Our Weatherization Assistance Program provides funding to 50 states, the District of Columbia, five U.S. territories, and three Indian Tribes to reduce energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes.
- Our Partnerships and Technical Assistance Team cultivates diverse partnerships, provides technical assistance and supports the energy priorities of state and local governments to make full use of domestic energy resources.
- Our Strategic & Interagency Initiatives Team aligns federal resources, such as DOE’s Clean Energy for Low Income Communities Accelerator, to help state and local communities implement advanced energy solutions, particularly in underserved communities.
