NIMHD began in 1990 when the NIH Office of Minority Programs was established in the NIH Office of the Director, at the request of then HHS Secretary Dr. Louis Sullivan. The Office was elevated through three iterations of legislative authority: First, in 1993, it became the Office of Research on Minority Health; in 2000, the Office was elevated to the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities; and in 2010, the Center was re-designated the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Each transition provided a more defined role in NIH’s research agenda and greater funding authority to address minority health and health disparities. Dr. John Ruffin served as the founding director at each level of the organization. Learn more about the Institute’s history and progress here.
