NIMHD Celebrates Its 10 Year Anniversary
NIMHD is proud to celebrate 10 years as an Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Throughout 2020, please join us to commemorate our decade of work toward an America in which all populations have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives.
Events we are planning include:
- NIMHD 10th Anniversary Scientific Symposium: Innovations to Promote Health Equity is a day-long scientific symposium featuring innovative discoveries, prominent researchers, and strategic discussions on minority health and health disparities, March 3, 2020. View videocast NIH Videocast.
- Director’s Seminar Series, a lecture series highlighting NIMHD grantees who are advancing the science of minority health and health disparities
- Active and Healthy Bingo Challenge, a virtual activity in recognition of National Minority Health Month. April 1-30, 2020
- Active and Healthy Community Walk/Run/Roll, a national virtual activity in recognition of National Minority Health Month. April 1-30, 2020, Postponed due to COVID-19
- NIH at the USA Science & Engineering Festival, a national event to inspire students from K-12 to learn about and consider careers in STEM fields. NIMHD began in 1990 when the NIH Office of Minority Programs was established in the NIH Office of the Director, at the request of then HHS Secretary Dr. Louis Sullivan. The Office was elevated through three iterations of legislative authority: First, in 1993, it became the Office of Research on Minority Health; in 2000, the Office was elevated to the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities; and in 2010, the Center was re-designated the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Each transition provided a more defined role in NIH’s research agenda and greater funding authority to address minority health and health disparities. Dr. John Ruffin served as the founding director at each level of the organization. Learn more about the Institute’s history and progress here.
