It’s a library-themed battle as Saint George of #Metadata City takes on the Arrearage Squid in the annual staff #Mummers play at the #LibraryOfCongress! Traditionally performed in #England and #Ireland at holiday time, Mummers performed these 15-minute plays as they went from house to house and pub to pub, collecting food, drink, and small change as a reward for their entertainment. The plays always involved a Hero and a Villain, and a theme of Death and Resurrection. Audiences are encouraged to cheer for their favorite characters, and boo their least favorite. #happyholidays

As we mark the 75th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the Library is adding 25 more oral histories from survivors of the battle recently donated by @aenetworks @HISTORY. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden and Veterans History Project Director Karen Lloyd presented a certificate of appreciation to A&E Networks President and General Manager Jana Bennett at a ceremony last week, where the recordings joined more than 250 other Pearl Harbor collections in the VHP. #PearlHarbor #75thAnniversary #veterans #LibraryOfCongress
Luthier John Montgomery inspects the strings on the 1697 "Castelbarco" cello made by Cremonese master Antonio Stradivari, one of five Stradivari instruments originally donated to the Library by Gertrude Clarke Whittall in 1935. According to her bequest, the instruments would be played from time to time, as they were intended. To that end, she established the Whittall Foundation, an endowment to finance professional in-house use of the instruments and concerts for the public. Happy birthday to Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre! #Daguerre, inventor of the first practical process of #photography, was born on this date in 1789 near Paris, France. A successful commercial artist and a skilled theatrical designer, Daguerre began experimenting with the effects of light upon translucent paintings in the 1820s. In 1829, he formed a partnership with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765-1833) to improve the process that Niépce had developed to take the first permanent photograph in 1826-27. After several years of experimentation, Daguerre developed a more convenient and effective method of photography, naming it after himself—the #daguerreotype. In 1839, he formally announced the process and he and Niépce’s son sold the rights for the daguerreotype to the French government. (Prints and Photographs Division) #LibraryOfCongress #collections
