Steam cleaning! Construction crews at the new Paradise Combined Cycle Gas Plant are using steam to clean the piping and then venting the steam, which is called, 'steam blows.' The piping system has to be cleaned before testing the steam turbine next month. Exhaust from the three giant gas turbines, maintained at 700-degrees, creates steam to turn a steam turbine and generator. The 1,025-megawatt station near Drakesboro, Ky., will provide cleaner power generation for about 640,000 homes and businesses.
The filling of Kentucky Reservoir in 1945 opened the Tennessee River to year-round navigation and linked the Tennessee Valley with the nation’s Inland Waterway System. President Truman dedicated the dam on Oct. 10, 1945. #TBT #BuiltForThePeople
It might be said that it's a geographical oddity - Situated at the confluence of the Caney Fork, Collins, and Rocky Rivers with a spectacular 30-foot horseshoe cascading waterfall is the 100-year-old Great Falls Dam. Operations at the middle Tennessee dam began in January of 1917 and was a premier project of the Tennessee Electric Power Company. It was purchased 22 years later by TVA and remains the quirkiest hydro project in the fleet. Happy birthday Great Falls!
We've upgraded the bulldozers used in the coal yards at Cumberland and Kingston Fossil Plants. The new equipment features shatterproof glass to protect operators in the event of a fall into a hole and being covered by dirt and debris. Now that's a big dozer!
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted and docketed our Early Site Permit application for the potential development of the next generation of nuclear power technology - Small Modular Reactors. The application determines the suitability of the site for potential construction and operation of multiple SMR units at the Clinch River Site in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Taking six years to build (1938 – 1944) and employing over 4800 workers at its peak, Kentucky Dam is the longest in the TVA system, and the reservoir, which stretches for 184 miles across the states of Kentucky and Tennessee, is the largest in the eastern United States. #TBT #BuiltForThePeople
Just in time for freezing temperatures this weekend, Sequoyah Unit 1 has returned to service following a ‎planned refueling outage. Unit 1 provides enough energy to supply 650,000 homes. #nuclearpower #cold

On the tenth day of Christmas, TVA gave to me: Ten Linemen Working! Our lineworkers are specially trained to install, maintain and repair power lines. After a storm or other natural disaster, they are the first people on the scene working to get the power restored for our customers.
We’re investing more than $50 million at Kingston Fossil Plant as part of our commitment to dry storage of ash and other coal combustion residuals. That includes $33 million for a dewatering facility to remove moisture from the bottom ash, which is sold for concrete and other products.
