The NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) are a set of programs established by Congress and are designed to retain highly qualified investigators, including health professionals, in biomedical or biobehavioral research careers. The LRP awards repay up to $50,000 annually of a researcher's qualified educational debt in return for a commitment to engage in NIH mission-relevant research. There are eight LRPs, five for researchers not employed by NIH (Extramural) and three for researchers employed by NIH (Intramural). Research funding from NIH is not required to participate in the Extramural LRPs, and Extramural and Intramural LRP awardees may apply for subsequent, competitive renewal awards as long as they meet Program eligibility. Although organized around broad research areas, the LRPs do not fund research projects. LRP awards are based on an applicant's potential to build and sustain a research career. Application Period: Annually from September 1 through November 15, at 8:00 PM EST

NIDCR will consider applications from investigators who are engaged in dental, oral, and craniofacial research and match program areas described in three of the five NIH extramural Loan Repayment Programs: Clinical Research Program, Pediatric Research Program, and Health Disparities Research Program. Awards are based on an applicant's potential to build and sustain a research career.

Potential Applicants should contact their direct supervisor in order to determine if their position qualifies for the Intramural LRPs. Applicants, in consultation with their supervisor, will determine which Intramural LRP is most appropriately matched to their research
